Spraying of Mosquito Repellent & Block Visits
Dear Residents,
In view of the recent Zika and dengue cases in Singapore, Chua Chu Kang Town Council has stepped up the fight against mosquito breeding in Chua Chu Kang Town.
Vector Control Efforts
Our Property Team has inspected the estates for mosquito breeding, covering areas such as rooftops, pump rooms, drainages, and places with potted plants. While at work, our Property Team also protected themselves by spraying of mosquito repellent provided by the Town Council.
We have taken measures including flushing, oiling drains, and misting to prevent mosquito breeding, and replacing of concrete slabs with metal grating to facilitate ease of inspection, cleaning and flushing.
We Must All Stamp Out Mosquito Breeding
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a Facebook post on Thursday: “Our best defence is to eradicate mosquitoes and destroy breeding habitats, all over Singapore”. – The Straits Times, 1 September 2016
The best way to beat Zika is for everyone – every household, construction site and agency in charge of public areas to stop mosquito breeding.
According to NEA, the majority of mosquito breeding sites are found in homes. The Town Council will do outreach in the estates to raise awareness of the Zika virus, emphasise the need to prevent mosquito breeding, and advise residents to apply repellent.
Our Action Plan
Educational banners and posters will be put up around the estates, and flyers and brochures showing the 5-step mozzie wipeout will be placed at the Town Council’s offices for residents to takeaway.
Together with NEA and grassroots leaders, the Town Council will be involved in a large scale educational campaign on Sunday, 4 September 2016, where flyers will be distributed to residents to educate them on mosquito breeding prevention.
Let’s all work together to make our homes safe and free from Zika and dengue!

Dear Residents,
Recently, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has confirmed cases of locally transmitted Zika virus infection in Singapore. On the other hand, the number of dengue cases has also risen. While MOH and National Environment Agency (NEA) have stepped up their fight against Zika and dengue, the Town Council will also continue to diligently inspect the estates for potential mosquito breeding sites, and carry out our scheduled fogging.
We also encourage residents to be vigilant of mosquito breeding in their homes. About 80% of mosquito breeding sites were found in our residents’ homes. The external areas such as construction sites, shopping centres and surrounding areas make up the remaining 20%.
The best way to prevent infection is to stop mosquito breeding. We hope all residents will help to keep their estates free from Zika and dengue.
What is the Zika virus?
Zika virus infection in humans has been reported since the 1950s. It is transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes (which bite in the daytime), identical to dengue. Zika is generally a mild disease. Zika may cause a viral fever similar to dengue or chikungunya, with fever, skin rashes, body aches and headache. However, most people infected with the Zika virus infection do not develop symptoms. There is no vaccine or specific anti-viral drugs.
How is the Zika virus spread?
The Zika virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the common species found locally). A mosquito is infected when it takes a blood meal from a Zika-infected person and later transmits the virus to other people it bites.
What precautionary measures can be taken?
Like dengue fever, to prevent the spread of the virus, we must first prevent the breeding of its vector, the Aedes mosquito. The Aedes mosquito is easily identifiable by the distinctive black and white stripes on its body. It prefers to breed in clean, stagnant water easily found in our homes. To prevent breeding of the Aedes mosquito, we need to frequently check and remove stagnant water in our homes.

Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Adviser to Chua Chu Kang GRC GROs (Keat Hong), announced the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) for Blocks 271 – 295 Choa Chu Kang Ave 2/3 at the constituency’s National Day Dinner.
This precinct will be revitalised with new facilities bringing it up to par with the newer HDB developments under the Government’s fully-funded NRP. The NRP is also aligned with KEAT HONG 2020 – our vision to transform Keat Hong into an active, vibrant, and revitalised residential hub.
To further enhance the beauty of our green neighbourhood, we propose the rejuvenation of the Tembusu Park. By provisioning new facilities as well as enhancing the landscape, residents will be able to enjoy the beauty of nature. The existing jogging track will also be upgraded, promoting an active lifestyle for all.
We also hope to transform the existing open areas into vibrant communal spaces with the upgrading and provision of various new amenities. By using these communal spaces as gathering points for our residents, it can help encourage inter-generational bonding and build our community spirit.
We will pay special attention to the provision of multi-generation fitness facilities, such as playgrounds and fitness corners. Through these facilities, more residents, both young and old, will be able to engage in healthy activities.
To improve connectivity in the neighbourhood, the roofs of existing covered linkways will be extended and side screens will be added to provide better shelter. New covered linkways will also be built, ensuring that all residents are well-protected rain or shine.
Residents will have the opportunity to voice out their views and suggestions on how their estate can be improved under the NRP. There will be upcoming Sharing Sessions organised in October or November where residents can play a part in shaping the neighbourhood by sharing with us their inputs.
We look forward to your active participation and support for the NRP!

We wish to congratulate our Town Council Councillors on being conferred the following awards at the 2016 National Day Awards!
The Public Service Medal
1. Mdm Mary Choo, PBM
2. Mr Tin Hlaing, PBM
3. Mr Gan Ong Peng, PBM

Launched in 2013, My Block Sparkles is an annual competition aimed at raising awareness as well as encouraging residents to keep their estates clean.
Based on the quality of the Social Dimension Proofs submitted as well as the Physical Dimension Assessment by our panel of judges for Round 2, we have selected one Residents’ Committee (RC) per constituency for the advancement to Round 3 of the competition.
The Social Dimension Proofs submitted include photographs, Powerpoint presentations, and even videos of the campaigns and activities which the RCs organised to promote the competition. The Physical Dimension Assessment was a point system assessment based on the level of cleanliness, amount of obstructions/illegal fixtures/dangerously placed items found in the block.
We hope that all residents will continue to keep their blocks clean and safe. All households within the top 3 winning blocks will be entitled to a one-off S&CC rebate. A plaque will also be installed at the void deck to recognise the efforts made by residents.
For more information about My Block Sparkles, you may contact us at info@ccktc.org.sg or 6569 0388.

‘Operation WE Clean Up!’ is a one-day exercise coordinated by the Keep Singapore Clean Movement to involve everyone, both young and old, to demonstrate their support and yearning for a truly clean Singapore.
Together with Dr Amy Khor Lean Suan, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Minister of the Environment and Water Resources, MP for Hong Kah North and Vice-Chairman of Chua Chu Kang Town Council, residents in Hong Kah North took part in clean-up activities in the estates as part of the campaign.
While we were pleased to see residents actively participating in the exercise to show their support, residents themselves also felt a sense of accomplishment after sprucing up their estates. It is through such activities that we hope to also raise community awareness; encouraging residents to play a part in keeping their living environment safe and clean.

Last year, we came together as a nation to mourn the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, founding father of Singapore and our nation’s First Prime Minister. Mr Lee, a strong supporter of Singapore’s greening efforts, had a dream to turn our country into a garden city. Since the inception of the annual Tree Planting Day, he has never missed a single tree planting event.
One year later, we decided to honour that dream.
Together with Sparkletots Pre-school, Chua Chu Kang Town Council held 2 commemorative tree planting events; one in Chua Chu Kang, and another in Bukit Gombak. Both were respectively attended by Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Health and MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC (Chua Chu Kang), and Ms Low Yen Ling, Mayor of South West District, Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Education & Ministry of Trade and Industry, MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC (Bukit Gombak) and Vice-Chairman of Chua Chu Kang Town Council.
It was a both a fun and meaningful day. The children had an opportunity to voice out their understanding of our nation’s progress over the years, and they enjoyed the short session out in the sun as they assisted Mr Gan and Ms Low with the planting of the Tembusu Trees.
As we progress together as a nation, let us continue working together to uphold that garden city dream for both our children, and our children’s children.

We cordially invite the residents of Block 401 – 428 Choa Chu Kang Ave 3/4 to join us at the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) Sharing Sessions! The proposal and design for the NRP will be revealed; you will also be able to voice out their views and suggestions through the Sharing Sessions.
The precinct will see improvements to the common areas through the renewal and provision of additional facilities with the Government’s fully-funded NRP. The NRP will only be implemented if at least 75% of the eligible lessees in this neighbourhood support it. Thus, we look forward to your active participation and support for the NRP!

The Integrated Family Playground located at Block 355 Bukit Batok Street 31 was officially re-opened by Dr Amy Khor Lean Suan, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Minister of the Environment and Water Resources, MP for Hong Kah North and Vice-Chairman of Chua Chu Kang Town Council on 28 February 2016.
The children can now have fun with other neighbouring children at the upgraded playground which consist of an innovative new-concept cycling station called “Speed Racer” which uses human kinetic energy to power an electronic racing game board. Game on!
