Beat the Heat

In Singapore, we are developing our climate resilience on multiple fronts. One important area focuses on making our homes and estates more green and as cool as possible!

To prepare for rising temperatures, here are some of the ways we beat the heat in CCK Town.

1. Planting trees for cooler homes and more shade

Our ongoing tree planting efforts continue to grow. Today, CCK Town is home to an estimated 23,000 trees, contributing to the OneMillionTrees movement.  We will continue to enhance our living environment with more trees and shrubs. Look out for our next tree-planting activity!

Creating greater shelter with selected tree species

Working together with NParks, we have chosen the syzygium myrtifolium tree to be one of the species that we plant in CCK Town. This tree has a relatively dense canopy, which helps to provide shade and reduce surrounding temperatures.

On 16 May, we planted 130 of these trees at Blk 445 Choa Chu Kang Ave 4, facing the highway. These trees will also help to serve as a buffer and reduce noise from highway traffic.

2. Creating greener spaces

We are increasing the green coverage of our estates to reduce heat absorption by hard surfaces (e.g. concrete) and to cool the environment.

Some of our multi-storey carparks in CCK have been converted into “green roofs”. HDB’s Prefabricated Extensive Green (PEG) Roof Trays are designed to reduce glare and reflection, improve air quality, and also cool down ambient temperatures.

3. Introducing cool paint

Cool paint is a type of paint containing additives that reflect the sun’s heat. It reduces surface heat absorption and heat emission.

In Singapore, cool paint has been found to reduce ambient temperatures by up to 2°C. By 2030, HDB’s goal is to use cool coatings on all of our HDB estates.

This will enhance thermal comfort for residents and help reduce residents’ energy consumption since less energy from air conditioning systems is needed to cool their flats.

4. Building covered linkways & porches

We are improving our neighbourhoods with more covered linkways and porches to provide residents with shelter and comfort, in rain or shine.

We’ve added 22 new sheltered linkways across CCK Town in the last year. Stay tuned for more enhancements coming your way!
