Practice energy-saving habits together
Are you ready to make energy-saving your next family challenge?
Read our tips below to get started!
Everyone can contribute to the effort with daily actions. When we all use energy wisely, we benefit from a greener home.
Children
- Enjoy playtime without plugging in, for example, at the many playgrounds in CCK Town. Keep an eye out for the fun events and activities at our libraries too!

- Use smaller, simpler devices that can still serve your needs. A laptop generally consumes less power than a desktop computer.
- Remember to switch off screens and chargers when screen time is over. You can also use up less power by dimming the screen brightness, so that the screen is not overly bright.
- Keep cool with fans, as well as light-colored, breathable clothing after school!

Parents
- Choose “eco mode” for your devices and machines (e.g. motor vehicles, laptops, washing machines, dishwashers). This option will get the job done while using less energy.
- Choose energy-efficient appliances (e.g. refrigerators and air-conditioners with more energy-efficiency ticks, LED light bulbs).
- Practice energy-efficient behaviour
- For laundry in particular: Always wash your laundry on a full load. Use colder water if possible because heating up water is one of the most energy-intensive processes by a washing machine.

- Plan ahead for daily tasks to minimise usage of appliances. For example:
- Use your washing machine in the morning and hang-dry your clothes instead of using a dryer machine
- Shower earlier to minimise the need for a hair dryer
- Make your commute greener: carpool, take public transport, walk or cycle

Grandparents
- Use a thermos-flask to store your hot water, instead of an electric air-pot
- Switch off water heater immediately after use
- Switch off the TV and chargers immediately after use
- Switch off the power at the power outlet itself.
- Appliances, such as smart TV sets and internet modems, will still consume power even if they are switched off or on standby mode.

Other Good Household Habits
- Keep cool the smart way!
- Avoid over-cooling your rooms and set the air-conditioner temperature to 25°C or higher.
Explore ‘hybrid’ cooling strategies: for example, using the air-conditioner set to a higher temperature (26.5°C) together with fans, can help you keep cool while using 30 per cent less energy (compared to just an air-conditioner set to 24°C)

- Cultivate the habit of turning devices off immediately after use. Turn off the lights when leaving a room, or when you do not need so many lights.

Ready, steady, save energy for a greener home!
